Forecast for the Abajos Area Mountains

Eric Trenbeath
Issued by Eric Trenbeath on
Sunday morning, February 23, 2020
Minor snowfall amounts have not changed conditions much and the avalanche danger remains generally LOW. Low danger doesn't mean no danger and it may still be possible to trigger an isolated wind drift in steep, upper elevation, wind affected terrain. Carry appropriate rescue gear and continue to practice safe travel techniques.

Weather and Snow
Camp Jackson and Buckboard Flat Snotel sites are both reporting 3" of new snow overnight. Expect to find a couple more inches up high. Look for lingering showers this morning and gradually clearing skies by this afternoon. Light to moderate SW winds will shift to NW later in the day, and high temps will be near 30 degrees. Northwest winds will be on the increase tomorrow. The rest of the week looks dry.
Our man Kevin was out and about on Friday and reported a "diverse day of snow conditions" with damp snow down low in both the sun and shade, various sun and wind crusts, as well as areas with loose, punchy, sugary snow. Read his full observation here. Minor amounts of new snow at low elevations aren't likely to improve things much, but up high there may be enough new snow to provide a nice refresh.
Snow totals at Buckboard Flat (8924')
Snow totals at Camp Jackson (8858')
We are still at more than 100% of normal snowpack for SE Utah!
