Likely occurring last night during rates of high PI, there was an extensive natural avalanche cycle around the rose in the upper elevation red pine and maybird. These small soft slabs and dry loose slides were lightly covered this morning. There wasn't much slab cohesion in the new snow and most of the action resembled point releases. At 10,000 there was about 16 inches of new snow by noon and as viewed from afar, these slides looked to be failing within the new snow and not often down at the new/old interface. There were periods of heavy graupel around dusk yesterday 3/23.
This dramatically improved the quality of downhill travel. Around 1pm there was some light greenhousing on our descent and we noticed the snow surface quickly begin to dampen ~8000`.
Below is a size large BD guide glove for reference of HST in white pine parking lot. Below that are some shots of the aforementioned avalanches. Third photo being a small human slide off the red pine summer trail. Within the new snow.
