Clouds came and went throughout the day, accompanied by some prefrontal movement and light winds. Temperatures seemed to drop as the day progressed, feeling especially cold on shaded northerly aspects. Winds were mostly light, with occasional moderate gusts along the ridgelines.

Snow Characteristics Comments
Snow surfaces in the backcountry vary widely.
At lower elevations, the snow surface has started to weaken and facet. Mid-elevations in sheltered terrain still offer some settled, denser soft turns. Much of the mid and upper elevations, however, are dominated by a stout wind crust.
The 1/15 winds significantly impacted ridgelines, scouring snow surfaces and exposing more rocks. Below ridgelines, the wind crust remains stout and supportable. Near treeline, this crust has formed into a more solid, supportable slab in some areas.
Red Flags
Red Flags
Collapsing
Poor Snowpack Structure
Red Flags Comments
The primary concern is the weak snowpack structure that covers most of the range. However we did also get one collapse in a meadow near 10200'.
Comments
The primary focus of the day was getting my bearings and examining the weak snow across a variety of aspects and elevations. The main avalanche concern right now is a weak layer of faceted snow that formed during the December dry spell and was buried on 12/25. We know this layer exists about a foot below the surface on slopes facing W-N-E-SE, so that’s what we set out to investigate.
Above treeline, strong winds have made conditions unpredictable, stripping snow from many north and east-facing slopes that are typically loaded. Below treeline, the snow surface is shallow and weak, leaving little to no slab formation.
The most concerning terrain was near or at treeline, where we found the "sweet spot" of about a 1-foot slab sitting on top of the weak faceted snow.
During our travels, we also noted a few small natural wind slabs that had failed at higher elevations, likely during the period of elevated winds on the 15th.
