This 4 day AIARE rec 2 course will be held in BCC and LCC conditions dependent, approx 7am-4pm. Two days will split time between the field and classroom.

AIARE Level 2 Avalanche Course Advance your avalanche knowledge and decision-making skills. This four-day course is designed for experienced backcountry skiers and splitboarders who are ready to lead groups, navigate complex terrain, and make informed choices when avalanche information is limited.

Led by AIARE-certified instructors with AMGA training, you’ll refine your hazard assessment skills, strengthen your leadership abilities, and learn to apply a forecasting framework both with and without local avalanche bulletins.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Identifying specific avalanche hazards & high-consequence terrain
  • Using weather, snowpack, and avalanche observations to guide travel decisions
  • Leading small groups and facilitating decision-making discussions
  • Applying risk management strategies in challenging conditions
  • Building and using a simple forecasting framework in the field

Course Format:

  • Day 1–2: Split between classroom and field sessions
  • Day 3–4: Full field days in Big & Little Cottonwood Canyons (conditions dependent)

Included: Student manual, AIARE field book, and use of beacon, shovel, probe, and pack if needed. Demo skis and splitboards available by request.

Prerequisites: AIARE Level 1 (or equivalent) + Avalanche Rescue, at least one season of backcountry travel experience, and ability to travel in avalanche terrain.
