Forecast for the Abajos Area Mountains

The avalanche danger is MODERATE today on steep, wind drifted slopes at upper elevations that face the north half of the compass. And as the day heats up we will see a rising MODERATE danger for loose wet avalanches on sun-exposed slopes. Signs of instability include rollerballs, or pinwheels coming down the slope. Stay off of and out from under steep slopes if they become wet and sloppy.

Weather and Snow
Southerly winds picked up around 10:00 p.m. last night and have been averaging 30 mph since. Look for continued strong southerly winds today as a low-pressure system and associated cold front dig through northeastern Utah and into Colorado today. Skies will remain mostly sunny in our area with high temps in the low to mid 40's. Temps crash tonight and Tuesday will be sunny and comparatively cool. Dry and warming conditions make up the long term.

Snowpack Discussion
The mountains picked up about a foot of snow between Wednesday and Friday. Southerly winds on Thursday blew the snow around forming unstable drifts on leeward slopes, primarily on upper elevation northerly aspects. These drifts have gained strength and will be more stubborn to release today but you may still be able to trigger an avalanche on steep, wind drifted slopes. As the day heats up the danger will increase for loose wet avalanches on sun exposed slopes. Be alert to signs of wet snow instability such as rollerballs, pinwheels, and sloppy wet snow. Get off of and out from under steep slopes when these signs are present.
