Heavy snowfall has created dangerous avalanche conditions and the danger is HIGH today on all aspects, and at all elevations. Natural and human triggered avalanches are likely. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.

Avalanche Warning
THE FOREST SERVICE UTAH AVALANCHE CENTER IN MOAB HAS ISSUED A BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WARNING.
* TIMING... 6 AM MST FRIDAY THROUGH 6 AM MST SATURDAY.
* AFFECTED AREA...FOR THE LA SAL AND ABAJO MOUNTAINS OF SOUTHEASTERN UTAH
* AVALANCHE DANGER...THE AVALANCHE DANGER HAS RISEN TO HIGH.
* REASON/IMPACTS...HEAVY SNOW COMBINED WITH WIND HAS CREATED WIDESPREAD AREAS OF UNSTABLE SNOW AND DANGEROUS AVALANCHE CONDITIONS. BOTH HUMAN TRIGGERED AND NATURAL AVALANCHES ARE LIKELY. STAY OFF OF AND OUT FROM UNDER SLOPES STEEPER THAN 30 DEGREES. AVOID TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN.

Weather and Snow
30" of snow with more than 2" of water weight have fallen at Camp Jackson over the past 36 hours. 20" have fallen in the last 24". On the north side of the range, Buckboard Flat is reporting 20" storm totals. This is a big load of new snow to add to a weak snowpack. Moderate SE winds yesterday blew and drifted snow on to leeward slopes, forming deep and dangerous drifts up to 3' deep or more. Human triggered avalanches involving new and wind drifted snow, as well as buried persistent weak layers are likely today.
Snow showers will continue today with another 3"-7" possible. Light to moderate SW winds will shift to the NW later in the day. High temps will be in the low 20's. Things should clear out by tomorrow and we'll see some sunny skies.
