Weather and Snow
Current Conditions
High pressure has a firm hold on the weather with a distinct temperature inversion overnight. Higher locations are around 20˚F while lower locations are around 10˚F or even into the single digits. The north wind has been light. The snow surface is quite loose in many locations with fine grained "recrystalized" snow. This actually provides ok riding conditions where there aren't old tracks, sun crusts or wind crusts.
Mountain Weather
Mild weather will continue through the weekend. It'll be mostly sunny with high temperatures around 30 today and slightly warmer Saturday and Sunday. There is a small storm shaping up for about Tuesday or Wednesday of next week that might bring enough snow to call it a "refresher".

Description
The snowpack remains mostly stable at this time and there isn't all that much concern for avalanches. What I am keeping an eye on is the condition of the snow surface. Extended periods of high pressure with no storms causes the surface snow to turn into small grained loose sugary crystals. This is known as the "Near Surface Faceting" process. Depending on future weather patterns, this loose snow that is currently on the surface can become a buried "Persistent Weak Layer" after we receive more layers of new snow. It's difficult to say if this will become a problem but we have at least one ingredient for the dangerous avalanche recipe: sugary loose snow on the current snow surface.
