The avalanche danger is MODERATE and human triggered avalanches remain possible on steep, wind drifted slopes. A triggered wind slab also has the potential to step down into a buried, persistent weak layer causing a deeper and more dangerous avalanche. You are most likely to encounter a persistent weak layer on steep, shady, northerly facing slopes. Most low elevation and south-facing terrain have LOW danger.

Low clouds are spread across the valleys but skies are mostly clear in the mountains. It should be another beautiful day up there with sunny skies and high temps approaching 30 degrees. SW winds will increase later today bumping up into the 15-20 mph range along ridge tops. A fast-moving storm system will brush by to the north on Sunday, but conditions will remain dry for us through mid-week. Our next chance for snow is looking like Thu-Fri but it's still too far out to say. For now, get up above the gunk and enjoy the sunshine.
We're off to a great winter so far with a snowpack of near 200% of normal for this time of year!

NE winds on Thursday transported snow on to leeward slopes in the high country. Wind loading at mid-elevations has also been observed. Be on the lookout today for areas of wind drifted snow. A triggered wind slab also has the potential to step down into a buried, persistent weak layer causing a deeper and more dangerous avalanche. Avoid steep slopes that look to be wind-loaded, or that have a smooth, rounded appearance. Cracking or "whumphing" is a sign of instability.

Areas with poor snowpack structure continue to be observed but weak layers are displaying varying degrees of reactivity. Dave Garcia's party discovered a reactive weak layer Wednesday on a NW aspect at 10,150'. Some shallow snowpack areas are also developing a layer of weak, sugary, faceted snow near the ground. Prudent backcountry travelers will perform their own stability analyses before jumping on to steep terrain. You are most likely to trigger an avalanche on a buried persistent weak layer on north-facing slopes that are wind-loaded, or in areas with rocky, radical terrain that have a shallow snowpack.
