Forecast for the Abajos Area Mountains

The avalanche danger is HIGH in the Abajo mountains. Heavy snow and strong winds have created very dangerous avalanche conditions in the backcountry. Natural and human triggered avalanches are very likely today. Backcountry travelers should avoid all avalanche terrain today. This means staying off of slopes steeper than 30 degrees, and being sure there are no steep slopes above you.

Another Atmospheric River continues to impact the area with periods of heavy snow expected to last into Friday.

Snowpack Summary and General Conditions
Another 10 inches of wet, heavy snow fell in the Abajos overnight, bringing storm totals to just over 20" since Sunday night. What's really impressive is how heavy this snow is. 20" of new snow comes in at 4.1" of water. This is very heavy snow. This dense snow combined with very strong SW winds has resulted in very dangerous avalanche conditions. Travel advice is to avoid all avalanche terrain.
