Prival Avalanche Level 2 Course - 26 hour

Course Description

The Prival Level 2 is a three-day/24-hour course that provides backcountry travelers looking to take on a leadership role or contribute significant terrain, weather and snowpack information to a small group or avalanche center in the form of a formal observation.

The Level 2 meets AAA standard for advanced recreational adventurers who have taken a Level 1 and 8 hour Avalanche Rescue class. In this course expect to build on former knowledge of avalanche hazards using weather, field snowpack observations and seasonal data to build a forecast to aid in assessing terrain hazards. Plan to build clear communication skills to concisely articulate information to your group or forecast center.

Prerequisites

Participants must have the ability to travel in avalanche terrain. A Level 1 Course (certificate) or equivalent Level 1 training is required. A minimum of one winter of

practical experience after completing a Level 1 course is required before taking the Prival Level 2 course.

AAA approved one-day (8 hour) Avalanche Rescue Course. Certificate required

Learning Outcomes

- As prepared by the AAA Education Committee -

-Link season weather history and relevant snowpack processes to current snowpack structure and layering. -Use local avalanche advisory as well as other resources available, including remote weather stations, reports, and forecasts. -Contribute to group discussions in order to create an avalanche hazard assessment without a local advisory. -Prioritize relevancy of observations and snowpack tests based on avalanche hazard and problem(s) and apply at a local scale. Recording observations in a field book. -Gain deeper understanding of avalanche formation, triggering, and release mechanisms, including links to Avalanche Problems. -Recognize and manage risk: human factors, motivations, objectives, and limitations - through planning and communication. -Apply tools for planning, decision-making, and travel with consideration of group risk management and awareness of safe margins. -Practice travel protocols and techniques to mitigate risk exposure in a variety of avalanche terrain situations and challenges.

Who Should Take This Course

The Level 2 is a three-day course for those who have taken a Level 1 and an 8 hour Avalanche Rescue Course and have had at least a year of backcountry travel experience. The Level 2 provides the backcountry user looking for the information to take on a leadership role in a backcountry group or trip.
