bottom line Terrain to avoid- steep, upper elevation wind loaded terrain. While isolated and limited to a small portion of the terrain, the body beating consequences could be season ending. In general you'll find a LOW avalanche danger in a vast majority of the terrain along the Skyline this weekend.

current conditions Clouds are streaming into the area this morning as a cold front slides through the region. Temperatures are in the low to mid 20's and westerly winds have been busy all night, steadily blowing in the 20's and 30's. The Skyline is just on the edge of the recent systems that seem to stall right around Point of the Mountain. As such, riding and turning conditions are getting a bit grim, but with a little patience you can still find soft settled snow on upper elevation wind sheltered slopes.. Snow stake at Miller Flat Trailhead pretty much sums up the tale of a shallow snowpack. A view from Huntington Reservoir looking south towards Phone Shot. |

description
There's just and inch or two of new snow to blow around, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a fresh wind drift or two along the Skyline Summit that'll be sensitive to the additional weight of a rider. You're most likely to find fresh drifting in steep, upper elevation leeward terrain facing the north half of the compass, particularly on slopes that have an easterly aspect. While not widespread, deep, or dangerous, today's wind slabs may be large enough to catch you off guard and take you for a quick, adrenaline inducing ride.

weather Clouds, colder air, and gusty west-northwest winds are poised to roll into the region throughout the day as a cold storm system slides through the area. This is a moisture starved system and I'm not hedging my bets on game changing snow amounts. Maybe we'll squeak 2"-4" out of the storm before a break on Sunday with another similar system on tap for late Sunday into Monday. Temperatures will become more winter-like this weekend with daytime highs in the low 20's and overnight lows in the single digits. After the Monday system the computer models are waffling for the upcoming week. In general though, there don't appear to be any big storms in sight. |
